There is an energy I attempt to communicate in my visual art that I imagine is similar to the energy musicians hope to convey with sound.

I think of Duke Ellington’s song “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If You Ain’t Got That Swing)” in hopes that my artwork expresses the energy right in spite of any liberties I might take!

Each artwork is begun with an urge to physically express the visual and the emotional through marks, gestures and color.

Each mark on the canvas or screen, whether controlled or accidental, is met with a countermove based on the outcome (I can’t help thinking of the kind of “call and response” jazz musicians employ!). It is more of my having a conversation with the artwork vs. me telling it what to do!

Being born with a hand tremor ensures I am NOT in control of every mark and actually supports such a “lively and moving” conversation!
